Cassidy, Phillip Melitus, Archdeacon, Australian
Leading Sportsman at Lyndhurst College

The town of Moruya on the N.S.W. south coast should erect a monument to this Pastor who was 32 years in their midst, and who did grand work in building up the parish, taking an interest in sporting activities, and showed tender care for the aborigines in the vicinity. Phillip Cassidy was born in Prospect, N.S.W., on 8 July 1844. He studied for many years at Lyndhurst, perhaps commencing in 1867. His prowess on the football and cricket fields was unsurpassed. He toyed with the idea of becoming a Benedictine, commenced his noviceship under the name of Brother Melitus, but finally decided that the secular vocation of a priest was best for himself. He had been on the teaching staff at Lyndhurst prior to ordination, and always maintained a deep respect for the Order he once joined and that had given him his education. Ordination took place at the hands of Archbishop Roger Vaughan on 18 September 1875. Service was given at Windsor (1876)(1877), Haymarket (1881). The thirty-two year stay at Moruya seems to have extended from 1884-1916. He was Pastor of Newtown from 1916 until his death in 1922. A long and painful illness came his way before his passing on 22 December 1922. Age: 78. Burial: Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
