Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 28-29:

Carroll; Thomas, SJ, Irish
Still Riding His Bike as a Nonagenarian

If the reader is fortunately in possession of that neat little history on the North Sydney Parish — A Seed That Grew — by Fr. Henry Johnston S.J., this quote can be found on page 101: "Father Tom Carroll was always reckoned an Australian, but he was born in Ireland in 1848 (at Limerick) and came with his parents to South Australia in 1852...He joined the Austrian Province, which had a Mission there" (i.e. Sevenhill) "and made his noviceship there. His philosophical and theological studies were done at Innsbruck in Austria, where he was ordained in 1880 by the then Bishop of Adelaide, Dr. Reynolds. When the novitiate was opened at "Loyola" he went there as assistant to the Master of Novices. He was for many years at "Loyola" and looked after the neighbouring part of the parish, from 1912 to 1919 he was at St. Mary's (North Sydney), except for one year at Lavender Bay. Altogether he spent nearly thirty years in the parish. He then went back to South Australia where he continued to work till his death in August 1938. He was then over 90. He rode a bicycle about Adelaide till near the end, as he had done for many years in North Sydney. People remember how the children would gather around him and beg for a ride, which he never refused. He was a man of learning, but this was hidden behind the simplicity and kindness...The poor and unfortunate were the special objects of his care; he used his great skill as a carpenter in providing them with furniture. A picture worth preserving, which shows the man as he was, is that of Father Carroll at the back of his presbytery, mending the boots of a parishioner who could not afford to have it done in the ordinary way..." What Father Johnston has to say leaves very little for the columnist to add, save a few small points. The precise date of birth was 28 April 1848. He entered the S.J.s on 5 March 1868. The exact date of Ordination seems unclear — but the year, 1880. Norwood was his place of abode in Adelaide, and he died on 17 August 1938 — which meant that he had prepared for the task for 12 years and stuck to the task for another 58 years. The Psalmist avers: "Our span is seventy years, or eighty for those who are strong". Perhaps he should have added: "Ninety for those who are very strong".

Carroll, Thomas

Pastor; born Limerick, Ireland, 28 April 1848; died Adelaide, 17 August 1938, aged 90.

Thomas Carroll, brother of Francis, entered the Society at Sevenhill, South Australia, 5 February 1868, and studied the humanities, 1870-71. In 1873 he taught in St Francis Xavier seminary in Adelaide, and in 1878, left Sevenhill to study in Europe. He was ordained in 1882 and took his last vows on 10 October 1883.

In 1888 he was sent to Xavier College, Melbourne, as socius to the master of novices, and taught rhetoric to the juniors. In 1898 he went to the parish of Norwood, caring especially for the parochial schools, and in 1903 was sent to Loyola College, Greenwich, as minister, also engaging in pastoral work.

In 1912 he went to the parish of North Sydney, followed by two years at Lavender Bay, 1913-14. He returned to North Sydney, 1914-20, Sevenhill, 1920-21, and finally, Norwood parish, 1921-38. Here he was in charge of Holy Name Church, St Peter's, catechist at Holy Name, Loreto Marryatville and Norwood schools. He finally died at Calvary hospital, North Adelaide.
