Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Walsh, James Martin

Born in Dublin in [1873), he was brought up by an uncle following the early death of his parents. He studied at St John's College Waterford, and was ordained in 1900. Exact date and place of ordination unknown. He took up duty in the Armidale diocese. Appointed to Armidale he worked for three years as Diocesan Inspector of Schools and Bishop's Secretary. He was transferred to Gunnedah in 1904 as assistant priest, and then appointed parish priest of Gunnedah in March 1905 to succeed John O'Sullivan who died. Illness forced him to relinquish that position in 1918, when he was replaced by Daniel Keane. He then was appointed to Narrabri, and went from there to Manilla, where he assisted John Gibbons who was ill at the time. His final move was from Manilla to Tamworth as assistant priest on 28 September 1928, following the death of Gibbons. He was struck by a motor car near the Tamworth presbytery on the evening of 10 June 1930 while crossing the road, and died that evening from the injuries received. He died on 10 June 1930, and is buried in the Tamworth cemetery.
