Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, pp 86-87:
William Hogan

For 20 years, from 1925 to 1945, Fr William Hogan was Parish Priest of Ashgrove. Little is known about him. He was born in Tipperary in 1886, and later went through Mt Melleray and St Keiran's College, Kilkenny where he was ordained in mid 1920. Short-term curacies followed at Bulimba, Rosalie and the Cathedral before promotion to Parish Priest at Ashgrove.

It was during his time there that matters came to a head about parish boundaries: who should contribute to St Finbar's and who should go to Mass at Glenlyon, the Marist Fathers' Chapel? Archbishop Duhig went out. He solved the problem, or thought he had, by the mud map method - drawing a stick through the dirt to establish the boundary henceforth.

Fr Hogan contracted a painful illness. He died in the Mater Hospital on 7th February 1945. Before the funeral departed for Nudgee, the Archbishop mounted the pulpit to give an address on the sanctity and duties of the priesthood 'and paid a graceful tribute to the life and work of Fr Hogan'.
