Curtain, David, Very Rev. (Canon), Irish, Visitor
A Visitor Keen on Pilgrimages
Orators from overseas were frequently invited to Australia in the last century and the media, newspapers only of course, delighted in printing what the 'spruikers' had to say. Curtain was holidaying from the Island of Mauritius in 1890-1 and the 'Advocate' records his addresses in Bendigo, St. Kilda and elsewhere. In the St. Kilda address he made an offer to lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land on the 'Polynesian', due to sail in March 1891. There were no takers. Pockets were tight or empty on account of a Depression. In July of the same year it's recorded that the Canon was attached as an English-speaking confessor to the church of La Madeleine in Paris. And there ends the trail.
