Biographical Notes

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev Vincent Roland Maher, died 8 May 1979

Vincent Roland Maher was born at Kingaroy on 14th January, 1915, to Edward and Emily Maher. He attended Christian Brothers, Toowoomba and did his Seminary training at Springwood, Manly and Irish College. He was ordained at San Antonio, Via Merulana, Rome, on 18th July, 1937, by Archbishop Luigi Traglia. His first appointment was to Holy Name, Toowoomba in 1937. He was then based at the Cathedral from 1939-40; Dalby (1940-41); Chinchilla (1941-47); Stanthorpe (1947-49); Inglewood, as PP (1949-56); Texas, as PP (1957-69) and then Cambooya as PP. He died in 1979 in the Cathedral presbytery, having just rolled a cigarette, and is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery. Vince Maher was a very shy man who never lost his childhood attributes, although sometimes simple-minded, he was very clever and cutting in his wit when required. Famous for his simple anecdotes and childish ways. He was very fearful of Bishop Roper.
