"Ordained at Manly, December 1910. On sick leave. At H.C.C. 1901-1903." --- Obituary. Rev. Father Finn, Northern Advocate, Whangarei, 24 May 1928, p 6,https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NA19280524.2.68: (Special to "Northern Advocate.”) Auckland, This Day. Father Finn was on a visit to the city from his mother’s home at Tauranga. Though he complained during the evening of not feeling well, he remained chatting with the priests of the Cathedral and was last seen by them at 11 o’clock. Early this morning he was found lifeless in his room, heart failure having occurred and death having taken place some hours previously. Deceased was born at Gisborne 42 years ago and ordained in Sydney in 1911. He worked in several parishes of the Auckland diocese and in 1926 went to Sydney, where he spent nine months in the Lewisham Hospital. From Sydney he went to the Cathedral at Wagga Wagga, where, for several months, he acted as chaplain to the newly-erected Catholic Hospital. He returned in 1927 to his parents' home at Tauranga. His father, the late H.J. Finn, was well-known for many years as a solicitor in Gisborne, and died last August, at Tauranga. The Rev. Father Finn is survived by his mother and two brothers. --- T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Date and place of birth unknown. Details of education unknown. He studied at St Patrick's College Manly as a student for the Auckland diocese in the same ordination class as J P Harrington and L J O'Reilly. Manly records him as having been ordained in Sydney in December 1910, exact date unknown, for the Auckland diocese. He died on 24 May 1928, place of death unknown [New Zealand]. Place of burial unknown. He is recorded in Doody as having worked in the diocese for a period in 1911, but there is no evidence where and when. It is possible he spent a short time in the diocese visiting Manly classmates Harrington and O'Reilly. He was not a priest of the diocese. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
