Biographical Notes

Charleville, Goodna, etc, Qld - Brisbane Diocese

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev Michael Stapleton, died 26 July 1948

Michael Stapleton was born in Upperchurch, Co.Tipperary, Ireland in 1968. Seminary studies were undertaken at All Hallows College, Dublin, and on their completion he was ordained there on 24th June, 1897. He came to Brisbane with his classmates, Frs J.F.McCarthy and T.Lee. He served in the following places: Assistant Priest, Charleville (1895-1914); Parish Priest Goodna (there 1914-1920) and Hamilton (1924-1948). Michael Stapleton was one of the 'characters' of the Archdiocese. Some of his idiosyncrasies were picked up during his period of western service. For example, while at Hamilton he is said to have conducted catechism class with a stock-whip in hand - a method "which inculcated a lively sense of devotion and a very strong class attendance at Hamilton". When Father Denis O'Rourke was appointed to Hamilton, as his Assistant Priest, he found it better to live with the Lawler family across the road than share the residence with Fr Stapleton. He died in Hamilton in 1948 and is buried in Nudgee Cemetery.
