Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979, p 22:
Bassetto, Nicholas OSA (?), Italian
Needed a Chair to Mount His 'Cavallo'
Arr. Vic. 1869; served in Warrnambool, Port Fairy, St. Kilda, Portland, Daylesford where he came into conflict with Rev. George Barry, and in turn with Rev. Ottavio Barsanti. Good servant of Italian communities, but Bishop Goold was impatient with his deficiency in English, as happened with Joseph Ah Lee. Served briefly in Heathcote and Bendigo and then worked in Corop-Echuca district, living in house owned by Dr. Backhaus and proved himself a worthy pioneer. Histories written on Augustinian parishes in Sandhurst acknowledge Bassetto as first resident of Rochester but claim he wasn't an Augustinian. In 1877 he left for Palestine and there the trail ends.
