Dalton, John, Archdeacon, Irish
Again the origin is given as County Kilkenny, but in this instance the town of Jamestown is specified. It will be noted that James and John were classmates at All Hallows. Grafton-Lismore records, however, give a different ordination date for John, namely, 24 June 1892. He arrived in Melbourne on the 'Orizaba' on the 20th of October and proceeded to the diocese of adoption, Sydney. The circumstances of transfer to Grafton-Lismore are unclear. Probably he had a brief time at Casino and then went as Pastor to Maclean in 1893-4. In this period he opened a church, costing £3,500, the construction of which had commenced earlier. From July 1895 to 1898 he was assisting at Lismore, assistant briefly at Casino and for a few months Pastor at Ballina. Then came from 1898 a pastorate of 13 years at Murwillumbah. And with a service of 19 years to his credit he died in that parish on 20 October 1911. His remains were interred in the sanctuary of the old church. With the building of a new church in 1937 his body was transferred to the local cemetery.
