Corboy, James John, Irish
He Lost Touch with His People at Home

Two letters in the Adelaide Church Archives tell something of the sad story of this man. The first is from his brother, a Jesuit who had been a missionary in South Africa for more than 25 years, to Archbishop Reynolds of Adelaide. The brother, it appears, had met up with Fr. James Blake Collier when the latter left Adelaide in 1899 to work in the Port Elizabeth Diocese. Collier provided the Jesuit missionary with a very disturbing report about Fr. James John. Hence the letter to the Archbishop inquiring about my brother's welfare and health: "My people in Ireland haven't heard from him for some years, and the news that I heard from Fr. Collier when coming here to Worsecter for a year's change of scene is far from satisfactory. I shall be very thankful if Your Grace will let me know where my brother is and how he is faring". (Letter dated 4.4.1900). ln September 1902 James John wrote to Archdeacon ....... in the Archbishop's absence, and requested letters of commendation, stating: "I have come to the conclusion that I am permanently demented and I could not give pain when my best thoughts are to please those who have been good to me".

A sad departure for the young priest who had arrived, it seems, in Sydney in 1888 and who had served until 1890 (or later) under Dean Patrick Slattery in Cooma. After transferring to Adelaide he was stationed in turn at Goodwood and at Mount Gambier under Dean Michael Ryan. He was certainly in the latter place in 1900 when the Jesuit brother expressed his fraternal concern to Dr. Reynolds. Nothing further is known and no judgment should be recorded.
