Aloysius Kreissl studied as a youth at the Jesuit College of Mariaschein in Bohemia, and entered the Society, 7 August 1856. He made his noviciate and studied rhetoric at Baumgartenberg, philosophy at Posen in Hungary, and theology at Innsbruck in the Tyrol, where he was ordained, 29 March 1863. After about six years teaching in Jesuit Colleges, on 3 December 1869, he left Vienna with two companions to sail to Australia. After his arrival he had charge for some time of several stations in the Sevenhill district: Lower Wakefield, the Burra, and Manoora in turn. He built churches and schools, and often travelled over the whole colony of South Australia collecting money. He was particularly responsible for the church of St Joseph at Kooringa, with the convent and school as well. Later he took charge of the Jamestown district, built another church, St Kilian at Caltowie, and enlarged the school. His final illness came upon him gradually, but it was not long. He suffered a stroke and lost the use of his right hand and his mind. He went to Sevenhill, and his condition deteriorated. After his death he was buried in the crypt of the church. He was a man who loved the Society, and remembered for his simplicity, charity and obedience. He was a hard worker, and patient in adversity. He was attracted by the poor and the sick, who found him responsive to their needs. (Reproduced by permission of Fr David Strong SJ.) |
