Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
O'Sullivan, John

Born on 9 November 1837 in Balincollig, Co Cork. He was educated at the Vincentian seminary Cork, where he excelled in Classics and English literature. He studied at All Hallows, Dublin. Date of ordination unknown. He was ordained for the diocese of Newport and Minevia in Wales where he worked for six years at Tredegar. When Timothy O'Mahony was appointed bishop of Armidale he volunteered to come with O'Mahony to the new diocese. He arrived in Sydney in November 1870 ahead of O'Mahony, and Bishop James Murray of Maitland took him to Maitland, where he spent a month. He finally reached Armidale by coach on 8 December 1870, the day the foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid. His first appointment in the diocese was to Tenterfield, responsible for Tenterfield, Emmaville and Glen Innes. He then transferred to Kempsey, where he remained for five years. He was then appointed to Grafton, where he remained for 13 years. He had been resident in Grafton from 1876 to 1888 and was there when new bishop of Grafton Jeremiah Joseph Doyle took up residence. Doyle attempted to transfer him to Murwillumbah. O'Sullivan twice refused, and ultimately was taken into the Armidale diocese, appointed initially to Emmaville, then to Gunnedah. In later years there was much friction over outstanding debts on Grafton properties, with O'Sullivan blaming Doyle for not paying the interest on them. Matters were not resolved until after O'Sullivan's death when Doyle had to fix the matter. He died in Gunnedah on 27 February 1905 after a severe protracted illness. He was buried in Gunnedah cemetery.

O'Sullivan, M

An 'M O'Sullivan' is listed in The Clarence, New England, Macleay and Gwydir Almanac and Gazetteer for the year 1871, Grafton, Thomas Page, 1871 as being at Tenterfield and Glen Innes. It appears that the first name 'M' should be 'John', such that the listing should be for John O'Sullivan.
