Biographical Notes

Return of the Roman Catholic Bishop, The Hobarton Mercury, Hobart, 17 Jan 1855, p 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3334718:

We have received information that the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hobarton left England in the Bernicia, which sailed from the Downs on the 16th of October. He was accompanied by several clergymen, and amongst them a son of Mr. Fitzgerald, of Elizabeth-street, and who is the first native of this colony ordained for the priesthood. We understand that arrangements have been made, so that immediately the Bernicia is signalized, a flag will be hoisted on the tower of St. Joseph's, which is to be considered as a summons to the congregation to assemble prior to proceeding to attend the disembarkation of the Bishop, and presenting him with an address, signifying the gladness with which they welcome his return.

Campbell Town, The Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston, 7 February 1863, p 4, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article72193598:

(From a Correspondent.)
4th February, 1863
Every one, of whatever religious denomination, regrets the departure from this district, of the Rev. J. J. Fitzgerald. The first native Catholic Clergyman, the reverend gentleman combined with a love of country, and his countrymen generally, all those excellent qualifications which endeared to those around him, the Christian, the Philanthropist, and the Man. Mr. Fitzgerald has been a resident of Campbell Town for eight years—he has laboured extensively in this large district, and leaves behind glorious fruit, the result of his labors. To his most praiseworthy exertions, we are indebted for the Church of St. Michael, so beautifully situated in our romantic township. The people of Cullenswood owe to his labors their neat place of worship known as St. Mary's,—and the Church at Avoca was erected mainly by his unremitting application. He was always engaged in some public effort or the other, and his plan of operations ever commended itself to all with whom he came in contact. For wherever he went, he carried with him smiles of encouragement—a loving heart— and gentle spirit. Long will he be remembered in this district wherein he has won so many affectionate friends—and good, and kind, and earnest as may be his successors, his name will be ever cherished. Mr. Fitzgerald leaves this colony with the approbation of his Bishop and Brethren engaged in the Mission of God—and will be established in a field of labor in England, wherein he is certain to attain eminence.

Town Talk and Table Chat, The Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston, 1 July 1865, p 4, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article72359469:

We regret to say that our obituary records the death of the Rev. J. Fitzgerald, whose removal from Campbell Town, about two years and a half ago caused such general regret. The reverend gentleman, who was brother in-law to Mr. J. Murphy, of Brisbane-street, died at Plymouth, England, after a long illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude and patience.
