Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, pp 151-153:
Errol Stanaway

'In my experience, no more promising student has ever left the halls of this College.' So said Mons. Hayden of St Patrick's College, Manly, when speaking of Errol Aloysius Stanaway.

Errol was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, where he was educated by the Christian Brothers. Somewhere along the line, he converted to Catholicism, then felt called to the priesthood. He crossed to Sydney to go through Springwood and Manly where he so impressed the authorities by great brilliance and qualities of leadership.

During a visit to Manly by Archbishop Duhig, Errol Stanaway was adopted for Brisbane. He was ordained in 1920.

Another version is that he visited Brisbane as a commercial traveller. He felt drawn towards conversion, was directed to the Jesuits, then soon after was on his way to Manly and the Priesthood.

At first he worked at the Cathedral, then was appointed Rector of St Leo's University College. 'He was admirably suited for that position and many of the older members of the learned professions in Brisbane today will remember him from the days of their residence at St Leo's with gratitude and respect. In his health and vigour, he was undoubtedly one of the ablest priests in the Archdiocese. A man of deep culture and widely read, his sermons and discourses attracted many to hear him,' said Archbishop O'Donnell.

From 1925 until 1928, Fr Stanaway was Parish Priest of Kedron, but with that went the added duties of helping to organise the Archdiocesan contribution to the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney in 1928 and the subsequent visit of Cardinal Cerretti to Brisbane.

From Kedron he went to Bulimba as Parish Priest in 1929. Here he introduced the Holy Name Society which soon spread to most parishes in the Archdiocese.

In 1936, he went to Dutton Park, remaining until 1952.

From this time, ill health forced semi-retirement. He did relieving work at Surfers Paradise where people assumed he was such a learned man by the number of books he had. He was also Chaplain at Nudgee Orphanage for a period.

The remaining eight years he spent in Mt Olivet Hospital where he died on 20th March 1972. Burial at Nudgee followed Mass at the Cathedral. It is greatly to be regretted that the promise of his early years was not fulfilled later in life.
