Biographical Notes

Ordination. Tomorrow's Ceremony, Daily Mercury, Mackay, 17 November 1934, p 8, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article172970615:

To-morrow morning at 9 o'clock the first ordination to the priesthood of a Mackay native performed in this city will take place, when Rev. Denis Gordon Kenneally will be ordained by the Bishop of Rockhampton (Rt. Rev. Dr. R. Hayes). Special seating arrangements have been made within St. Patrick's for the occasion; it is estimated about 1500 persons will be seated, and while it is probable that the attendance will be greater than that number the overflow will be directed to vantage points outside the church. His Lordship has arrived in Mackay, as also have several other visiting priests, in cluding Father P. M. Bannon, of Bundaberg, who is the only other Mackay native to have been ordained to the priesthood. Father Bannon's sacerdotal jubilee was celebrated recently. Father Walsh, D.D., who for several years was chaplain to Monsignor Mulcahy here, has arrived, and priests in the Mackay district also will take part in the ceremony. Rev. Denis Kenneally arrived from Sydney last night.

Sudden Death. Rev. Father Denis Keneally, Daily Mercury, Mackay, 22 September 1943, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article170767012:

The sudden death in Mackay yesterday of Rev. Father Denis Gordon Keneally shocked the community and removed one of the most brilliant priests in the diocese.

Rev. Father Keneally was on a tour of inspection of Catholic schools in the district, and was conducting examinations in religious training. At the week-end he was in the outlying parishes and was due to begin examinations in Mackay yesterday.

In traveling, he contracted a chill which affected him internally and he suffered sleeplessness on Monday night. Yesterday morning he entered hospital and to the consternation of his family and devoted parishioners he quickly relapsed into a critical condition, and passed away in the early afternoon.

Ordained in Mackay
Rev. Father Keneally was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Keneally, of Juliet-street, Mackay. He was a native of this city, and was the first Mackay boy to be ordained to the priesthood in this parish.

The ordination ceremony took place in St. Patrick's Church, before a congregation of 1500, on November 18, 1934. The Bishop of Rockhampton, Rt. Rev. Dr. R. Hayes, was the officiating prelate and there was present in a distinguished gathering of scholarly clerics Rev. Father P. M. Bannon, then of Bundaberg, who was the only other Mackay native to have been ordained into the priesthood. Rev. Father Bannon was not elevated to the priesthood in his home town.

For the first four years after his ordination, Father Keneally was attached to the teaching staff at Springwood ecclesiastical college in NSW. He was then posted to Rockhampton cathedral, and at intervals labored in the priesthood at Walkerston and Mackay.

Solemn requiem Mass for the repose of the deceased priest will be said in St. Patrick's Church this morning at 10 o'clock, and the funeral will move from the church at 11.30.
