Biographical Notes

Boorowa, Henty, Goulburn, Gunning, etc, NSW

Obituary. Rev. Father Cleary, The Age, Brisbane, 2 June 1917, p 5, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article292008000:

The Rev. T. D. Cleary, parish priest of St. Francis Xavier's Church, Gunning, New South Wales, died at the Dalby General Hospital on Wednesday, May 16, aged 48 years. Father Cleary had been in indifferent health for some time, and was ordered by his medical adviser to visit Queensland. He arrived in Dalby on the Monday evening previous to his death in a very low condition, and later was taken to the hospital.

Father Cleary was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and was educated at St. Jarlath's College, Galway, and the Ecclesiastical Seminary at Carlow. He was ordained priest about 22 years ago, and came to Australia immediately afterwards. He laboured in various portions of the Goulburn diocese. He was at Yass, Burrowa, Henty, and Goulburn, holding in the city parish the office of administrator, and about eighteen months ago was appointed to Gunning. Fr. Cleary was a very kind-hearted man, and an energetic and earnest priest, and was popular in all the parishes where he was stationed. The remains were sent to Gunning for interment.—R.I.P.

Cleary, Timothy Delaney, Irish
Pastor of Gunning, Goulburn Diocese

Timothy Delaney Cleary was destined to serve the Goulburn Diocese for a brief nineteen years. Place of origin is not clear, possibly County Limerick like several of his name. He was trained for the priesthood at Carlow and ordained on 4 June 1898. Appointments seem to have been: Burrowa as assistant until 1905 under Fr. James Kennedy. Temporary charge of Burrowa in 1906. Adm. at Goulburn Cathedral in the 1907-9 period. Pastor of Henty until 1916. Successor to Timothy O'Shaughnessy at Gunning in 1917, or possibly 1916. The stay there was all too short. While on a holiday or sick leave he died at Dalley, Queensland, endeavouring to escape, no doubt, the cold bursts of the south in the sunny climate of the north-eastern State. His remains were brought back for a Requiem at Goulburn on 22 May 1917 and burial in the nearby cemetery at Kenmore. Death date on his tombstone reads either 16th or 19th of May. The age was 47.
