Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 140:

Dicks, John, MSC, German
Interned During World War 1

If the question were posed to people with a memory of World War 1 as to how many priests were interned the answer would probably stop short with the one well-known name, Charles Jerger CP. But there were others, among them John Dicks. What little information we have filed comes through Fr. John McMahon, MSC Archives, Canberra. Father Dicks was born on 28 September 1889, and ordained priest in the Sacred Heart Order on 2 June 1895. He passed through Sydney on the way to New Britain in the latter year. Prior to his internment he was Religious Superior in Vunapope. Length of internment is unknown but after his release he went to America and then to Germany. He was Provincial of the German Province in the period 1920-1926, and later on was Religious Superior in Reading, USA. Finally he was Procurator of the USA Province. He died there on 9 October 1951 at the age of 81.
