Byrne, Peter, Rt. Rev., Irish
Great Friend of the Christian Brothers
This prominent cleric in the Sydney Archdiocese was born in County Louth in 1854. Seminary of studies has not been ascertained, but according to the Vaughan list of priests in St. Mary's Archives, Sydney, ordination took place on 28.10.1879. Early directories show that he served at St. Mary's Cathedral, Hurstville and in the southern town of Cooma (1895) (1897). First pastorate, about 1900, was in Concord-Burwood and he remained there until 1916. In that year a part of his parish was excised to form the new parish of Strathfield. The Jubilee Book of the Christian Brothers, 1869-1919, page 123, pays this compliment: "Burwood School was erected in 1909 by Very Rev. P. Byrne. No sooner had the Brothers purchased 'Mt. Royal', now known as 'Mt. St. Mary s', for a Novitiate, than his good Pastor applied for Brothers. He not only built a fine school, but generously assisted the Brothers by giving them a chaplain and daily Mass in consideration for the work undertaken for the boys of the parish. The school was opened only a few years when it had to be enlarged, so as to almost double the accommodation. This Fr. Byrne did most willingly and generously..." Byrne was Pastor of Strathfield from 1916 until his death on March 18, 1922. He had been made a Monsignor in 1920, and for several years had been a Diocesan Consultor. Age: 66. Burial: Rookwood Cemetery.
