Cavanagh, Patrick, Irish
Long Reign in Nagambie, Sandhurst Diocese

Others with this name on the pre-1900 scene, John, Michael, Patrick, Phillip, etc. start with a 'K'. This particular Patrick is the only one commencing in 'C'. He was born at Croghan, County Wexford. Little is known of his family background, apart from an Advocate news item that his father, Michael, died in 1900 at the age of 91, and that he had a brother on the Irish Mission, Father Richard of Gusserane. Where he was educated and when he was ordained are unknown. He appears on the scene in the Sandhurst Diocese in the early '80s. Directories indicate that he was an assistant at Shepparton, 1884-1888; P.P. of Myrtleford 1888-1892; and then came his long reign at Nagambie, 1892-1930 - a service only broken by two overseas trips in 1906 and 1925. Unfortunately nothing further is known about his long stay and achievements in Nagambie. Death came his way on 19 March 1930, and his remains rest in the parish that he served so long.
