Personal, The Southern Cross, Adelaide, 10 May 1940, p 12, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article167765260:
Word was received last week that the Very Rev. Father John A. Scanlon, O.Carm., of Middle Park, Melbourne, had died after a long illness. The late Father Scanlon was well known in South Australia as Prior of the Carmelite House at Alberton from 1920 to 1924. Born in Ireland, he came to Australia over forty years ago. The greater part of his life in Australia was spent in Victoria. The splendid church and school buildings at Port Melbourne were erected by Father Scanlon during his term of office as Prior there. May his soul rest in peace.
