He had one brother and five sisters. Frs B. Nolan, J.R. Pender and R. Lynch are nephews. While still a schoolboy his family moved to Ipswich. Early education was in Toowoomba with the Mercy Sisters and senior studies took place at St Joseph's Brisbane and Nudgee (being Nudgee's first old-boy priest). Fr Nolan attended St Patrick's Seminary, Manly and was ordained in Sydney by Cardinal Moran on 30th November, 1900. He briefly served at Kangaroo Point but his first appointment was to St Patrick's Church Toowoomba in 1901 and then to the Parish of Dalby (1902-1907). When Father Denis Byrne died in 1907, after 40 years as Parish Priest, Fr Nolan was appointed to succeed him. The Parish then comprised 17,500 square miles. He became a Dean in 1925. When the Toowoomba Diocese was created in 1929, he remained on as Parish Priest. Though in ill health in the latter years of his life, it was only death which could remove him from office. He was named Domestic Prelate with the title Monsignor in 1930. He died in the Dalby Hospital in 1950 aged 75, and is buried in Dalby. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
