Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, p 70:
Charles Casey

On top of his roll-top desk at Rosewood, Fr Charlie Casey has a photo of his great-uncle - this Fr Charles Francis Casey. He was born in the Fassifern district near Ipswich in 1875, a first generation Queenslander of Irish parents.

And along with James Bergin and Mick Masterson, he was among the early Queenslanders to be ordained from the new seminary at Manly in November of 1898.

He worked in many places including Charleville, Stanthorpe, Helidon, Ipswich, Crows Nest, St Patrick's [Valley] and Southport, while for some years he was on loan in places like Bangalow [1903] and Port Macquarie [1908]. It is said that he was once chipped by Archbishop Duhig 'for preaching against the King'. Two of his sisters were in the Mercy Order - Srs M. Gabriel and Irenaus.

Fr Casey's health was not good and his death in St Vincent's Hospital, Toowoomba on 10th June 1930 was not unexpected. He was buried by Bishop Byrne in Toowoomba.

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev Charles F Casey, died 10 June 1930

Born in the Toowoomba district on 18th September 1875, he undertook Seminary studies at St Patrick's Manly and was ordained in Sydney on 30th November, 1898. His priestly career led him to serve, in what are today, the Dioceses of Lismore, Brisbane and Toowoomba. He gave service in Charleville, Stanthorpe (1902), Bangalow, Port Macquarie, Southport, Gatton, Helidon (1914?), Fortitude Valley and Gympie. In 1914, The Age mentions him as formerly of Richmond River and Helidon (sic) and a native of the Ipswich district. His first pastorate, about 1922, was at Crow's Nest. In 1929 the new Bishop of Toowoomba, Dr Byrne, appointed Father Casey to Roma, but bad health brought about his return to Crow's Nest. He had been in St Vincent's Hospital for several months when he died at age 54. His burial took place in Toowoomba.

Casey, Charles F., Australian
An Early Manlian for Brisbane Archdiocese

In the Manly Annual of 1930 we read: "The latest of Manly's pioneers whom the Angel of Death has claimed is Father Charles Casey, who was ordained in Sydney as far back as November 1898. Though his death was not unexpected, since he had been in St. Vincent's Hospital, Toowoomba, for several months, his death on June 10 last came as a shock to his many friends, and especially to his class mates..." Charles F. was seemingly a native of the Toowoomba region, and gave service in Charleville, Stanthorpe (1902), Bangalow (1903) (1905), Port Macquarie (1908), Southport (1911), Ipswich (1915), Fortitude Valley (1919) (1920), Gympie (1922). First pastorate, about 1922, was at Crow's Nest where to quote the Manly Annual "he gave of his best." In 1929 the new Bishop of Toowoomba, Dr. Byrne, appointed Charles to Roma, but bad health brought about his return to Crow's Nest. "He was arranging to leave Hospital when death came, and his one regret was that he could not breathe his last among his own beloved people..." The age was 54, and burial took place in Toowoomba.
