Cummings, Stephen, Very Rev., S.M., English
"A Splendid Preacher"
The English-born on this list constitute about one to two per cent of the total personnel. Stephen is a notable among them as a missionary and preacher. He was born in Southwark on 18 August 1844 and probably was ordained as a secular before joining the Marists. Profession took place on 29 September 1875. After service in Hunters Hill, Sydney, from 1886 to 1888 he was transferred to New Zealand. Apart from a sick leave period in 1895 he pursued a very active apostolate in the Christchurch Diocese for a period of ten years. An account of his activities, sermons etc. can be found in the pages of the N.Z. Tablet from 1888 to 1898. Bad health caused his return to London in the latter year. The death date is recorded as 21 January 1899 at the age of 54. A photo of the Christchurch Vicar General may be found in Cardinal Moran's history on page 920.
