Fr. Benoît Chalandon, d. 1935
New Caledonia
He was born in Loire, France in 1856. After formation in his own country, Switzerland and Spain, he arrived in New Caledonia in 1887, at the age of 31. His first 9 years were spent in Bonde. After a year at La Roche, on Mare, he was appointed to Tye for 6 years, where he built the church and was involved in demands for land rights for the indigenous people, which resulted in the administration asking for his transfer. He then served in Touho for 20 years, before returning to Tye for the last 12 years of his life. He died at the age of 79.
