Biographical Notes

Death of Rev. Fr. O'Byrne, Port Pirie. Popular and Beloved Priest, The Southern Cross, Adelaide, 29 March 1934, p 10, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article168913934:

As we go to press there has come the news of the death of Rev. Father William Francis O'Byrne, which occurred at Port Pirie Hospital yesterday (Tuesday), March 27. For some time the late Father O'Byrne has not been in good health, but his death, occurring after but a brief illness, came as a painful surprise to his many friends, not only in the Port Augusta Diocese, in which be labored, but throughout the whole of this State. For some 26 years he has been attached to the Port Augusta Diocese, and in the North and the Far North he was well known and esteemed by people of all creeds and classes.

Father O'Byrne was born in County Waterford, Ireland, fifty years ago and educated at Mount Melleray. He pursued his theological studies at Rome, where he was ordained Priest in 1908. Port Pirie, his last post, was also the first place to which he was appointed as Assistant Priest to Fr. O'Mahony. From Port Pirie he went to Port Augusta, and later Peterborough. He was appointed Parish Priest of Hawker and later of Port Augusta. At the time of his death he had been for a few months Assistant Priest to Mgr. O'Rourke at Port Pirie, an appointment which his failing health in recent years necessitated. May his soul rest in peace.
