Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 10:

Byron, John, SJ, Very Rev., Irish?
The MDHC researcher of Melbourne Advocate files can claim credit for unearthing the activities of this Jesuit. The Advocate of 21.4.1880 reports his arrival by the SS 'South Australien', commenting that he belonged formerly to the Bathurst Diocese and had joined the SJ's a few years before. On July 22 the same paper described Father John as the head of an important mission station in Borneo in the Sandakan district which had 200 Catholics who "squat down and sing in their own tongue those beautiful Catholic hymns taught them by the direct followers of St. Francis Xavier". When these words were said Father John, along with other Borneo missionaries, was the guest of Bishop Martin Crane OSA in Bendigo. A visit was made by the missionary party to other Victorian parishes, such as Port Melbourne - when a presentation was made to Prior Butler O.Carm. It's unknown what the later career of the visitor was. Probably he returned to Borneo, and in the 1893-4 period appears to have been on relieving work in the Armidale Diocese - that is, presuming that John Byron listed for there is identical with John Byron SJ.

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Byron, John

Listed in E J Doody, Acta et Statuta 1951, Appendix VI, Obituary List, in the section headed 'supplementary list of priests who have also worked in the diocese', but with no details other than the period he reputedly worked in the diocese, in this case 1893-1894. He also is listed as Master of Ceremonies for the funeral Requiem for Dean David Mitchell held in the Armidale cathedral on 30 September 1893.
John Byron was a mission priest based in Sandakan, Borneo, who visited Australia for a period of rest and recuperation in 1893-1894, after some twelve years in Borneo where he and three colleagues established a mission. While he stayed in Victoria for some time the indications are that he did travel extensively, probably preaching about his mission work and raising funds. No other personal details are known.
