Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 36:

Chervier, Jean Claude, SM, French, Visitor
Another Marist Warrior in New Zealand

He is given a place on the list because he passed through Sydney at least once, in 1861. An appreciation of the calibre of the Marists in the last century can be gained by reading Lilian G. Key's book 'Philip Viard, Bishop of Wellington', which outlines in chronological style the movements and activities of the men in question, including Chervier - a zealous and outstanding missionary. A photo of the man is given a place in Cardinal Moran's History, page 960. The life details are: born in the Lyons Diocese 6 January 1833; professed on 3 January 1857; arrived in Wellington Diocese 26 February 1861. Forty years of unbroken service were given in the Wellington and Christchurch Dioceses; and among the places of service are found: Canterbury (1861), Port Cooper (1861), Akaroa, Christchurch (1865), Lincoln (1886), Leeston (1899). But that is only part of a story of a 'good and faithful servant' who died on 29 January 1901, at the age of 68. His remains rest in Blenheim.
