Life of Devotion to Church Work, Bairnsdale Advertiser and East Gippsland Stock and Station Journal, 21 June 1946, p 1, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article269365841: A life of devoted service to the church ended on Thursday, the 13th inst., with the death of Rev. Father W. McLoughlin, who passed away at the Bairnsdale District Hospital, after being a patient there for four days. The late Father McLoughlin had been in ill-health for the past two years. He came from County Leitrim Ireland, in 1907, and commenced his work as a priest at Sale, and after a few months was transferred to Warragul. From there he went to Morwell. In the seven years of his work there he pioneered the Boolarra and Mirboo districts, and he spent two years at Bruthen. The late Father McLoughlin was a fine horseman, and in Gippsland South and East he practically "lived in the saddle," visiting hundreds of homes inspiring the people with his own high concept of faith and charity and winning their lasting friendship. He worked with great zeal, and during 20 years he was at Traralgon a new church, school and presbytery were built. Ill-health prevented him from maintaining the tempo of his many activities and for that reason he resigned from Traralgon. He was at Cowwarr and Maffra for brief periods before coming to Bairnsdale, where he spent the last four years of his life. The funeral took place on Saturday last at 10 a.m. Solemn Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church by Very Rev. Father J. Fitzpatrick, assisted by Rev. Fathers J. Callinan and S. Crowe. His Lordship the Bishop of Sale, Most Rev. Dr. Ryan, pronounced the absolution over the coffin before the funeral left St. Mary's Church and conducting the funeral service at the graveside. The funeral arrangements were made by G. H. Vickers. The late Father McLoughlin left £100 for a statue of St. Teresa, for St. Mary’s Church, Bairnsdale. |
