Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 5:

Byrne, James, Irish
First Pastor in Iona, Victoria

Born somewhere in County Kerry he came to Victoria on the 'Curzo', 6.10.1893. He had been ordained in mid 1893 at All Hallows College, Dublin. Like a good number of priests in the regime of Dr. Carr he was kept on the move yet proved by his 43 years of service that he was one of the "unsung heroes". Service at Daylesford 1893-5; Collingwood 1895-6; Geelong 1896-9; Flemington 1899-1905. Building up the new parish of Iona-Bunyip claimed his attention from 1905 to 1913; then back once more to the hills of Daylesford from 1913 to 1917. Then came an appointment to the important charge of St. Kilda West. The building of the church at Elwood (St. Columba's) stands to his credit. An overseas trip in 1925 ushered in a period of ill-health. Probably the remaining ten years were ones of enforced inactivity either at St. Kilda or elsewhere. R.I.P. 15.6.1936. Burial: Mortuary Chapel, Melbourne General Cemetery. Age: 68.
