Fr Charles Mathieu, d 1856
Fiji - Wallis and Futuna
He was born in Somme, France in 1809 and was ordained a priest of that diocese, becoming secretary of his Bishop. He joined the Society, attracted to the missions of Oceania and was professed a Marist in 1843. He left Europe that same year, aged 34, together with Bishop Douarre. His first 4 years were spent in Wallis. Then in 1848, he was sent to the new mission in Fiji. Arriving in Lakeba, where the mission had been founded for 3 years, they decided to move their headquarters to Levuka. From there, Father Matthieu founded the station at Rewa in 1852. In 1856 he was on his way back to Europe with Bishop Bataillon, who wished to have him made his Coadjutor Bishop, when he contracted typhoid in Sydney and died there, aged 47.
