Biographical Notes

Advocate, Melbourne, 9 May 1929, p 22, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article171657796:

Residents of Ballarat and Maryborough will learn with regret of the death of Rev. E. Daly at Ballyheigne, Kerry, Ireland. After his ordination at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Fr. Daly came to Australia and was for several years attached to the diocese of Ballarat.

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 124:

Daly, Edmund J., Irish
Temperance Advocate and Writer for 'Austral Light'

Born in County Kerry, the one which supplied more priests for the Australian Mission than any other County, Edmund came to give a six year service for Bishop Moore in the Ballarat Diocese. The Maynooth List of Students (ICR), No. 1664, gives his date of matriculation as 3 September 1885 and date of Ordination as 21 June 1891. He arrived in Melbourne later in 1891 on the 'Orizaba'. Warrnambool was his first posting for a few years. Along with Fr. Fitzmaurice, another temporary servant, he promoted the Father Mathew Temperance Society in the course of his seven year stay. Ararat was his next appointment, as assistant to the rumbustious Dean Peter O'Hare. Then Maryborough from 1895 to 1898. Here a raw climate took its toll. So after a brief stay at Creswick he returned to the Land of his Fathers.

His literary style and knowledge can be gauged from an article in the 'Austral Light' of 1897, entitled: Doctrine and History of Indulgences. On return to the Kerry Diocese in 1898 he gave 30 more years of service, notably as the Pastor of Ballyheigue. The exact date of death and relevant details have not been ascertained, but a Ballarat Diocesan Necrology, drawn up by the late Fr. J.P. Coughlin of Horsham, reveals that he died in 1929.
