All About People, Gundagai Independent and Pastoral, Agricultural and Mining Advocate, 20 May 1908, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article120267478:

On Saturday last there occurred the death of the Rev. Father Carroll, for some years past parish priest at Crookwell. Deceased was a native of Tipperary, Ireland, and was educated for the priesthood at All Hallows' College, Dublin. He came to Australia about 30 years ago, and held many important parishes in the diocese. He was, for years, administrator of the Cathedral parish, Goulburn, and was in charge at Deniliquin, Germanton, Tumut, and, last, of the Crookwell parish, where he died in his 58th year. He was also one of the Diocesan Consultors. He was a warm-hearted Irishman, indeed a typical Soggarth Aroon, and his early death will be deplored by a wide circle of friends. Father Carroll's death was not unexpected, as for the past couple of months he had been in ill-health. Ten years ago he visited Gundagai, on the occasion of the death of Father Finnegan. Rev. Father O'Dwyer, Tumut, went through Gundagai on Saturday for the purpose of attending the funeral.

Carroll, Thomas Joseph, Very Rev., Irish
"Pious, Zealous, Learned, and a Great Citizen"

So runs the tribute of praise in the Argyle Liberal - Crookwell, in issue of 19 May 1908; and the columnist is indebted to Father 'Bill' Kennedy of the Canberra-Goulburn Archdiocese for filling in many of the details. From All Hallows Records it appears that Thomas Joseph was born in June 1851 at the town of Drum and Inch, Diocese of Cashel, County Tipperary. Parents: John and Joanna (Ryan). He is reputed to have had two priest brothers: Father John Carroll (who is an elusive person to track down) in Rockhampton; and a Father Jeremiah who worked in Cashel Diocese. One sister - Sister Mary Lawrence - belonged to the Little Sisters of the Poor in London, and another was a Mrs Meagher in Tipperary. Education was obtained at Eadley's School, Templemore, and at All Hallows, Dublin. He was ordained for the Goulburn Diocese on 24 June 1878, arriving in Australia at the end of the same year. We trace his footsteps and places of service as follows: Albury (1881), Tumut, Goulburn - where he was Adm. (1886), Wilcannia (1888), Albury (1890), Wagga (1891), Narrandera (1893), Wagga (1897) (1898). He was given the Crookwell charge in 1898, and although dogged by ill-health for a number of years he made his mark as a builder. St. Mary's Church stands to his credit - as well as a Convent and School. He made additions to the Presbytery, and built churches at Laggan and Golspie. A branch of the A.H.C. Guild was due to his sponsorship. In the last few years of life he underwent several operations in Melbourne, being under the care of Drs. Neilly and McInerny. On return to his parish he was attended to by Dr. Romeo of Crookwell and Dr. Riolo of Goulburn. Complications of dropsy and pleurisy brought about his death on 16 May 1908 at Crookwell. "Brusque of manner, tenderhearted, wise in judgment, outspoken and determined... " such were the eulogies in the local newspaper when he was laid to rest in the Crookwell Cemetery. He had achieved much in the span of 57 years.
