Biographical Notes

The Queen of the Colonies, Queensland Daily Guardian, Brisbane, 17 April 1863, p 4, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article288543469:

We have received from another source a more full account of the voyage of this vessel than appears in another portion of this journal; which account we subjoin:—
The latest arrival in our port from England is the beautiful Yankee clipper-built ship Queen of the Colonies, which started finally from the shores of the old world at five in the evening of the 5th of January. The first part of her voyage, however, dates from the 20th of December, on which day she left London, and the Downs on Christmas Day. [...] The services of the Roman Catholic Church were conducted by the Rev. T.J. Quinn, a county Armagh man, as regularly as the weather permitted; [...]

Priests of whom we know little

The names of these priests appear on the Sick and Infirm Priests’ Sustentation Society prayer card for deceased priests, but of whom our knowledge is limited. [...]

Terrance Quinn was born to Owen and Anne (nee Donnelly) of Donaghmore Armagh on 25 March 1837. First educated at St Patrick’s in Armagh he entered All Hallows College in 1857. Originally he was a student for Newark diocese in the USA but he chose Brisbane prior to his priestly ordination in 1862. He boarded the Queen of the Colonies with 341 Irish migrants, as their chaplain, arriving in Moreton Bay on 9 April 1863.(1) In his diary Fr Brun mentions that, when he visited his fellow Augustinian Fr Tissot shortly after arriving in the diocese in March 1863, he had a glass of wine with Fr Terrance in Maryborough.(2) In 1864 Fr Quinn was stationed at Ipswich.(3) There is no more information on him.
