Funeral brochure:
Eugene James Cuskelly was born in Toowoomba on 6 January 1924, one of five sons of Francis and Mary Cuskelly, nee Garske.
He was educated at the Cooyar State School and Chinchilla Convent School, completing his secondary education at Downlands College, Toowoomba from 1937 to 1940.
His seminary and theological formation began at Sacred Heart Theological College, Croydon, Victoria [1943-1947] and was completed in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University [1947-1951] where he gained a Doctorate in Sacred Theology.
He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on 18 December 1948. Following his return to Australia he served at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, Randwick NSW [1951-52], Lecturer in Dogmatic and Spiritual Theology, Croydon [1952-53; 1956-67], Secretary to the Apostolic Delegate, Sydney [1954-56]. He was the first Rector of St. Paul's National Seminary, Kensington [1967-1969] until his election as Superior General of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, Rome [ 1969-81].
On 21 July 1982 he was ordained to the Episcopate [Titular Bishop of Altino] and appointed an Auxiliary Bishop to Archbishop Francis Rush. He retired on 30 April, 1996 and died on 21 March 1999.
These few words cannot sufficiently express the significance of his contribution to the life of both the universal Church and local Church of Brisbane as priest and bishop, teacher, author, wise and prudent leader and friend.
Bishop Cuskelly will be missed by his brothers and their families, this Archdiocese, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, and a great number of people throughout the world who will forever be grateful for the magnitude of what he achieved as God's servant and His humble missionary, priest and bishop.
May he now be completely united in the Heart of Christ and rest contentedly forever in the House of the Lord whom he served and loved.
Requiescat in Pace
