He attended his early schooling at Holy Name and St Mary's Christian Brothers College, Toowoomba. He attended Pius XII Provincial Seminary at Banyo from 1942 – 1948 and was ordained in St Patrick's Cathedral, by Bishop Roper, on the 29th June, 1948. He spent the first two years of his priesthood as an Assistant in Charleville. This was followed by appointments to Roma (1951-53); Stanthorpe (1953-55); Goondiwindi (1955-57); Toowoomba (1957-60); Dalby (1960-62); Surat (1962-71) and Crows Nest (1971-79). Ill health plagued Fr White for a great deal of his later life. In 1986 he was diagnosed with Diabetes and in 1989 he suffered the first of several strokes, which eventually led to great difficulties with his speech, and, which worsened with age. This led to an early retirement from active minstry. With a great love for the Mass, he was able to concelebrate at St Patrick's Cathedral for a number of years when he resided in a nearby parish house. He also had a great love for the Labor Party and for things mechanical, especially forms of transport – his father having worked on the Railways. He even gained a pilot's licence during his time in Dalby, although with not always successful landings! He spent his final year under the compassionate care of Lourdes Home for the Aged. He died on Tuesday 8th February, aged 75. His life was commemorated in a vigil held at Lourdes Home and in a Requiem Mass held at St Patrick's Cathedral on Monday 13th February. He is buried in the Toowoomba Garden of Remembrance. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
