Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979, p 35:
Brophy, John J., Rt. Rev. L.L.B., B.A., Irish
Great Benefactor to the Parish of Dubbo
b. Bagnalstown, Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow 1862; ed. K'enny, and Royal Uni., Dublin; ord. 23.10.'85 in Dublin. Taught at St. Charles' Seminary, B'urst. Later assistant at Parkes. Built churches at Molong and Carcoar while on relieving duty there. Coonamble 1893-9. Built convents at Walgett and Coonabarabran. In between long journeys involved he did an L.L.B course by correspondence and obtained his degree at Melb. Uni. Appointed to Dubbo in 1899. Building record there is phenomenal: first church at Gilgandra, present church at Giralambone, Dubbo presbytery, North Dubbo school., transepts in the Dubbo church, Narromine convent, Dubbo boys' school. As well he introduced the Patrician Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy. Often taught history and geometry in the local schools himself. Examiner of Diocesan Schools. "Supporter of federation of States into a Commonwealth. Optimist at all times. Good contraversionalist and conversationalist. Prolific reader.." So goes the eulogy of Bishop John Norton when Brophy died at his brother's home at Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow in Feb. 1923; age 60. Strange that the pastor died away from his beloved people when on a well-earned holiday. De La Salle College perpetuates his memory in gratitude, partly for his leaving £7,100 to the Dubbo parish.
