He was educated at Burncourt National School, then Mount Melleray seminary. He next attended St John's College, Waterford, ordained on 19 June 1898. On arrival in the diocese he was appointed to the cathedral staff, remaining in Armidale until May 1914, when transferred to Inverell as parish priest. He only remained in Inverell for six months, transferring to Glen Innes on the death of Pierce Corcoran. He then remained at Glen Innes until his death in 1955. In March 1904 he was appointed as administrator of the Cathedral parish by Bishop P J O'Connor, as one of his first appointments after succeeding to the see. In February 1907 he was given the title 'Dean'. From March 1913 he took twelve months of leave and visited Ireland, returning in April 1914. Following his arrival in Glen Innes in December 1914 he was made a Monsignor in January 1915, the rank upgraded in September 1920. He was Vicar General of the diocese for many years, and Vicar Capitular during the period between the death of Bishop J A Coleman and the arrival of Bishop E J Doody. In 1932, when the election was held by priests of the diocese to nominate preferred candidates as co-adjutor bishop he received the second number of votes, with John Aloysius Coleman receiving the most. Coleman ultimately became co-adjutor bishop. When Administrator of the cathedral parish he was opposed to the arrival of the French De La Salle Brothers (1906), preferring the Irish members of the Community, and there are documented instances of his arguments with the Brothers, who at one time threatened to depart the diocese. It took considerable effort by O'Connor, then bishop, to persuade the Brothers to remain. Reputedly a very difficult and almost tyrannical priestly colleague but well regarded by parishioners. A nephew, Maurice Tully was a priest of the diocese. A sister came from Ireland and became a member of the Good Samaritan Order in Sydney. He died on 12 April 1955, and is buried in the Glen Innes church grounds. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
