Dr. Whelan, in the absence of his Grace the Archbishop, held an ordination in the College of the Foreign Missions on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 20th, 21st, and 22nd October. The holy order of priesthood was conferred on the Rev. Michael O'Fannan, who is destined for the missions of Newark, New Jersey (U.S.), and on the Rev. James S. Cotter, destined for San Francisco, California. In the month of September his lordship ordained the Rev. William Tierney for the diocese of Melbourne, Australia. On Saturday, the 16th October, the Rev. James Moore, priest of the diocese of Melbourne, who lately completed his course of studies in All Hallows' College, embarked at Liverpool as chaplain on board the Annie Wilson. This vessel has just been despatched to Melbourne by the Emigration Commissioners. We are happy to say that the Commissioners have at length recognised the expediency of sending chaplains in the large emigrant vessels which they despatch to the Australian colonies. We trust that this principle will be extended as far as possible.—Freeman. --- Notice to Catholics, Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth, 16 January 1864, p 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article112894896: In consequence of the absence of Father Galen, at Melbourne, there will be no Mass at Beechworth, or the Woolshed, until Sunday, the 31st current, when Mass will be celebrated at both places, at the usual hour. --- Telegraphic Despatches. Victoria, Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth, 7 September 1867, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article198656362: (From our own correspondent.) --- The Herald, Melbourne, 7 December 1869, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article244912160: We perceive by the Ovens Spectator that the Rev. Father Tierney, for the first time since his late serious illness, officiated at St. Joseph's Church, Beechworth, on Sunday morning. We also learn that the Rev. Father McGillicuddy, is to take the place of the late Rev. Father Galen at Wangaratta. Father Egan, who has been officiating here since the death of Father Galen, replaces Father McGillicuddy at Mansfield. |
