Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 90-91:

Costello, Maurice, B.D., Irish
A Keen Student of Evolution

Darwin's Origin of the Species and The Descent of Man get short shrift from the Gordon curate writing in the Austral Light (long since defunct) in June 1902. Maurice Costello's writing may not be fully convincing in view of the headway made in the field of Natural Science since then; at least it does show that the priests writing in the last century, and in the turn of the century, were far from being 'nongs'. Scores of them contributed to Austral Light and other worth-while journals and a study of their thought on all matters would constitute a subject for a University thesis.

The county of origin has not been, as yet, ascertained. He was educated at Maynooth and ordained for the diocese of Kerry on 20 June 1897. For about a year he gave service in the Archdiocese of St. Andrew's and Edinburgh, and according to the diocesan records there left "in August 1898 on account of ill-health". He arrived in Melbourne on the 'Oruba' on 11 November of that year, probably intending to give temporary service — as was the custom with many Maynooth priests coming to Australia. They had been incardinated into a home diocese before ordination, and their bishops were reluctant to let their priests go to the Antipodes for ever and aye. In his eight year stay he can be traced through Directory pages as follows: St. Kilda East (1899); Flemington 1900); Bacchus Marsh (1900)(1901)(1902); Gordon (1902)(1904); Camberwell (1905); Williamstown (1905). He left Melbourne in January 1906 to return to his native diocese of Kerry.
