Chetail, Henry, MSC, French
Pastor of Botany Bay for Ten Years
The response from Religious Orders in registering this list of names has been generous - and no Order has been more generous in providing help than the Sacred Heart Order. Fathers William McCormack, John McMahon and Ted Lambert have been the main helpers. One of the above three has sent along this summary of the life of Father Henry Chetail: Born at Mars in the Diocese of Lyons on 17 July 1859. Professed 15 February 1878. Ordained 29 March 1884. Apparently he did not come to Australia until 1894 - no mention being found in the Directories of the late 80s and early 90s. He was Parish Priest of Botany, Sydney, from 1894 to 1904. If not the first he must have been one of the first MSCs to go to the Hobart Mission. In his book 'Planting a Faith in Hobart', author Father W.T. Southerwood writes: "The M.S.C. saga in Tasmania stretches back to the turn of the century. The priests of the Sacred Heart came to work in the vast parish of Campbell Town in 1903...Father Henry Chetail became a legendary figure. He made a lasting impact on scores of isolated Catholic families. He is buried in the Churchyard Cemetery at Campbell Town". Perhaps it was in 1903 that Chetail went there, and not in 1904 as inferred above. Death date is recorded as 16 March 1904.
