Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 4:

Byrne, James, Irish
Origin is unknown, and he would seem to have migrated from one Diocese to another. He first appears in Balaclava, South Australia in 1891, then in the Armidale Diocese from 1892 to 1906. Among places where he served are Tingha (CD 1892), and Wee Waa (CD 1897). Possibly he is the same James Byrne who was in the Geraldton Diocese in 1901. It is said by older clergy that like many another he 'bent the elbow', and so ended up under the care of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary at the Morriset Rest Home, N.S.W. He is buried at the nearby Cooranbong Cemetery.

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Byrne, James

No details of birth, education and ordination are known, other than born in Ireland. Shipping records in Melbourne indicate he arrived in Melbourne en route to Adelaide on Lusitania on 30 April 1887, ex London 17 March 1887. He was described as one of four young missionaries for the Archdiocese of Adelaide ex Kilkenny and Genoa Colleges. He appears to have moved to the Armidale diocese from Balaclava, South Australia in 1891, first appearing in the records in 1892 at Tingha, then Tamworth, then Wee Waa in 1897, then Bingara (1898). A James Byrne appears in the Geraldton diocese in 1901. In his entry in Footprints he is reputed to have had a drinking problem, and appears to have ended his days in the care of the Little Company of Mary Sisters at their Morisset Rest Home. Date and place of death unknown. Place of burial unknown, but possibly Cooranbong or Morisset.
