Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 44:

Clancy, John, SM, Irish, Visitor
New Zealand Teacher

The name has not as yet met the eye of MDHC researcher of Shipping Records in the State Library of Victoria, but the probability is that John visited the mainland. Hence the (V) visitor. He was born in Co. Kildare on 17 March 1865 and studied in Dundalk and Barcelona. Professed 3 June 1886. Arrived in New Zealand in 1891. (Marist Year Book 1927). The first ten years were spent in teaching at St. Patrick's College, Wellington. Parish appointments read: Nelson 1901-1909; Hokitika 1910-1920; Napier 1920-5; St. Mary's Wellington 1926-7. As indicated on Fr. Hosie's list he was at some stage P.P. in Reefton. He died in Wellington on 14 November 1927; age 62.
