Mr. O'Donoghue, Roman Catholic Clergyman. About twenty of them obtained employment in Ipswich, and the remainder on the day after their arrival proceeded up the country, their route lying in the direction of Warwick. --- Denis M. Long, Pioneer and Early Priests, Archdiocese of Brisbane, Deceased or retired by 1929, 2021, pp 91-92: The names of these priests appear on the Sick and Infirm Priests’ Sustentation Society prayer card for deceased priests, but of whom our knowledge is limited. [...] Edward O'Donoghue arrived in Brisbane as chaplain on the Maryborough on 16 October 1862, having left Queenstown on 27 March. He spent ten months in Ipswich, caring for that parish after the suspension of Fr McGinty, leaving on 13 August 1863 for Gayndah.(1) He arrived there in late September: it is the intention of the reverend gentleman to make this town the scene of his ministerial labours.(2) He arranged the building of the first church in Gayndah, which was incomplete when he returned to England on the Flying Cloud on 18 June 1864(3). A severe storm destroyed the complete building on 17 December 1864, before it could be used.(4) At the opening of a new church at Cowra in 1881 it was reported; Mass was celebrated by the Rev E O'Donohoe, of Queensland, who also preached an eloquent and telling discourse appropriate to the occasion.(5) Fr Southerwood notes that Fr O'Donoghue also served in the diocese of Sale.(6) Footnotes Reproduced by permission of Fr Denis Long. |
