Priest Drowned. Carried Out by Undertow., The West Australian, Perth, 21 November 1941, p 8, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article47170254:

While bathing at Cottesloe yesterday the Rev. Father Thomas Joseph Flanagan (27), of the Presbytery, Palmyra, was drowned. About midday he entered the water near the pier with the Rev. Father Smith. Father Flanagan, who was not a strong swimmer, was carried out from the beach by the undertow. He was seen to be in difficulties and his companion endeavoured to swim towards him but could make no headway.

Another bather, William Archibald Terry, made an unsuccessful effort to reach Father Flanagan, and then he returned to the beach to obtain a lifeline. In the meantime Father Flanagan disappeared. Father Smith was swept out by the current but he returned safely to the beach. No lifesaver was on duty at the time as the voluntary patrol only operates at week-ends and on public holidays. Father Flanagan's body was not recovered.

Washed Up By Ocean. Human Remains Found, The West Australian, Perth, 4 December 1941, p 4, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article47171998:

Human remains were washed up on the beach near the bottom of Grant-street, North Cottesloe, yesterday morning. They were seen first by a bather, Gladstone Henry Richardson, of Eric-street, who made a report to the Cottesloe police. The police recovered portion of the thighs and trunk of a human being believed to have been a male.

According to reports to the police, the only persons whose remains might have been expected to be washed up on the coast in the vicinity of Cottesloe were Lieut.-Col. Herman August Kuring (46), who was reported missing at Rottnest Island on September 4, and the Rev. Father Thomas Joseph Flanagan (27), of the Presbytery, Palmyra, who was drowned while bathing at the central beach, Cottesloe, on November 20. In neither case was the body found.
