Mr. Hyland, who has officiated at the Port Catholic Church lately, informed the Catholics of the Port on the 3rd instant that he was to be appointed resident priest at Virginia, and that the Rev. Mr. Woods would very likely officiate at the Port till the arrival of the Rev. Mr. Murphy, who is expected in the course of a few months from Europe, and who probably will be appointed resident priest at Port Adelaide. The Catholics of the Port will be very glad to have a resident priest settled amongst them." --- Topics of the Day, South Australian Advertiser, Adelaide, 11 September 1867, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article28800704: The Catholics of Virginia waited on the Rev. Father Hyland on Sunday last, September 8th, for the purpose of presenting him with a token of their attachment to him as their pastor, and as a mark of their estimation of the value of his labors during the short time he has been amongst them. Mr. J. Nash was deputed to present the address, which was accompanied by a purse containing 30 sovereigns. The address, which was signed by Messrs. William Featherstonhaugh, Michael Hewitt, Owen Nash, and several other leading and influential gentlemen of the congregation, in very forcible terms pointed out the cordial and affectionate feeling which the parish of Virginia entertained towards their pastor, in whose care they have been entrusted, and concluded by expressing a hope that he would live long amongst them to administer to their spiritual wants. The Rev. Father Hyland returned thanks in very feeling and appropriate terms, and re- marked that he was taken by surprise a few minutes ago when asked to accept that very valuable present. It was to him a source of great pleasure to see that they had the interest of their pastor at heart, which they had shown by their co-operation with him in carrying out the duties connected with the spiritual welfare of their Church ; and he trusted that he would carry out faithfully the duties of his holy office in administering to them the necessary spiritual offices and instructions of their holy religion. He concluded by again thanking them, and wishing them every blessing, both spiritual and temporal. --- Deaths, South Australian Register, Adelaide, 14 April 1868, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article39193144: Family NoticesHyland.— On the 13th April, of consumption the Rev. Thomas Hyland, of Kapunda, aged 28 years. May he rest in peace. --- Kapunda Herald and Northern Intelligencer, 17 April 1868, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article108264108: With regret we record the demise of the Rev. Thomas Hyland, Roman Catholic clergyman, who has been stationed in this district since December last. The rev. gentleman was suffering from consumption previous to his arrival, and expired on the morning of the 13th inst. at the residence of the Rev. F. Byrne. Father Hyland was a native of Ireland, having been born at Mitchellston, County Cork, in December, 1841. He received the rudiments of his education in a school conducted by the Christian brothers at Mitchellstown, and then entered the Trappiste Monastery, of Mount Millery [Melleray], Waterford, where he remained until he entered the Ecclesiastical College of All Hallows, near Dublin. He so distinguished himself in this establishment that he was ordained on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, 1866—two years sooner than the time allotted for divinity students. Very soon afterwards he left for Melbourne, en route for Adelaide, where he arrived in December, 1866. The rev. gentleman, although suffering much, was only confined to his bedroom the day previous to his death. On Wednesday, the 15th instant, an office and requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Rose's for the repose of his soul. The Rev. C. E. Reynolds, of Gawler, was the celebrant; the Rev. Theodore Bongaertz, of Willunga, deacon, and the Very Rev. J. Tappeiner, S.J., of Sevenhills, subdeacon. The assistant clergymen present were the Vicar-General, Archdeacon Russell, the Rev. Messrs. Woods and Murphy of Adelaide, Van der Heyden of Mount Barker, Hughes of Morphett Vale, with the Rev. F. Byrne. A large concourse of the laity was also present. At three o'clock on Wednesday the remains of the rev. gentleman were conveyed to St. John's Cemetery, followed by a large number of people. His body was lowered into the grave while his brother clergymen were chanting the Bendedictus. R. I. P. --- South Australian Chronicle and Weekly Mail, Adelaide, 18 Apr 1868, p 11, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article90039282: Our obituary contains a notice of the death of the Rev. Thomas J. Hyland, Roman Catholic clergyman, of Kapunda, who began his ecclesiastical course at All Hallows College, near Dublin, and was ordained at that place, on June 29, 1866. He arrived in South Australia in the November of the same year, and was stationed at Adelaide until the beginning of 1867, when he was removed to Kapunda. During the latter part of his studies at All Hallows College there were slight symptoms of consumption. These developed themselves most rapidly within the past few months, and for the last month he was entirely prostrate. He spent a fortnight in Adelaide for the purpose of seeing his medical advisers, and for recruiting his health, and returned to Kapunda on last Saturday week. On the Monday he was confined to his bed, and on Easter Monday morning about 11 o'clock he died. His remains will be buried at St. John's Church, near Kapunda, on Wednesday afternoon, at 3 o'clock. The deceased was about 28 years of age. --- Kapunda, South Australian Register, Adelaide, 21 April 1868, p 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article39181307: On Wednesday afternoon the remains of the Rev. Mr. Thomas Hyland, Roman Catholic Priest, were conveyed to their last resting-place at St. John's.
