Delahunty, Mark, Irish
Top Hat to Altar in lieu of Biretta
The title suggests an odd character. There are many good stories about him, preserved in clerical traditions. He came from Mooncoin, Diocese of Ossory, County Kilkenny, and was born in 1849. Education was received at the Christian Brothers' College, Waterford. He graduated to St. Patrick's Maynooth. College records show that he matriculated on 28 September 1871, and was ordained on 24 June 1878 for the Diocese of Ossory. Circumstances of his volunteering for service in the Adelaide Diocese are unknown. He arrived in 1880 (circa) having spent two years in Ossory. He worked in North Adelaide in the first years and contracted rheumatoid arthritis. Because of this ailment he had to have the big toe on the right foot amputated. In the midst of painful suffering he never lost his sense of humour, and capacity for doing the unusual. At times he was quite amusing in his eloquent apostrophes to his long lost toe, entreating it to return and receive a welcome similar to that extended to the Prodigal Son. Because of his love of 'Uisage beata' (Gaelic for blessed water, but not the holy water variety), he was temporarily silenced by Archbishop Reynolds. Priests who knew him well tell many a tale of his attempts to justify the failing. He was stationed in turn at North Adelaide, Port Augusta, Salisbury, Willunga, Manoora, Brampton. Then for twenty years he resided at West Terrace under the episcopal eye, carrying out the role of chaplain to the Dominican Convent in Franklin Street. After many years of suffering and a long stay in Calvary Hospital he died on 24 August 1927 at the age of 79. Perhaps the foibles and queerness were compensated for by the amusement he gave his clerical colleagues. Anyhow, he lived to enjoy a golden jubilee of service.
