[...] --- Loss of third eldest friar, Catholic Leader, Brisbane, 7 December 2003, p 5: Australia's Franciscan Friars celebrated the life of their third eldest friar with the funeral Mass of Fr Roch Allen at St Therese and St Anthony Church, Kedron in Brisbane on November 26. Fr Allen died on November 23, just one month short of his 90th birthday and his 66th anniversary of ordination. The Franciscans' Australian Provincial Minister, Fr Stephen Bliss, was principal celebrant at the funeral Mass. Franciscan Father Cassian Double, who preached the homily, said Fr Allen was a good ambassador for the friars. "He got on well with people and made a lot of close friends outside of the order," Fr Double said. Fr Allen's ministry included 10 years as a chaplain to leprosy patients on Fantome Island, off Townsville, from 1954-63. He went on to be parish priest of St Mary's, West Townsville, the Franciscans' first parish in Townsville diocese. The Franciscans' provincial vicar and province secretary, Fr Paul Smith, said Fr Allen's death brought to mind the contribution he and other friars of his generation made to the years of the province in Australia. He said Fr Allen was remembered particularly for his contribution through education of young men considering the Franciscan way of life, his chaplaincy to the lepers on Fantome Island, parish ministry in Townsville and school chaplaincy in Brisbane. Born Thomas Allen in South Melbourne on December 22, 1913, Fr Allen was given the name Roch when he was received into the novitiate on March 19, 1932. He had been living at Canossa Care at Oxley, in Brisbane's south west, at the time of his death. |
