Births Registered in the District of Cappagh in the Union of Tipperary in the Counties of Limerick & Tipperary. No. 270. On 25 May 1894 at Croughlaghan [Curraghlahan], Co. Limerick, birth of Michael, male, father Michael Hayes of Croughlaghan, farmer, mother Catherine Hayes formerly Clifford; informant: Michael Hayes, father, of Croughlaghan; 16 July 1894; Joseph Fitzgerald, Registrar." --- Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, p 116: There have been three other Fr Hayes in the Archdiocese - Thomas, Owen and Leo - but Michael Joseph Hayes does not seem to have been related to any of them. Michael arrived in 1921 from Ireland, a product of Mt Melleray and All Hallows College. He was curate at Rosalie and Maryborough before becoming Parish Priest of Caboolture and then Helidon. In the division of 1929, he stayed in the Toowoomba Diocese, being successively Parish Priest of Crow's Nest, Tannymorel, Oakey and finally Allora from 1951-1960. In ill health, he was brought down to the Mater Hospital in Brisbane where he died on 19th February 1960. Bishop Brennan buried him from St Patrick's in Toowoomba. Referring to his appointments, he said 'In all of these places he is remembered with reverence and gratitude: a good and faithful priest he surely was'. He arrived from Ireland in 1921, a product of Mt Melleray and All Hallows College. He was curate at Rosalie and Maryborough before becoming Parish Priest of Caboolture and then Helidon. After the formation of the Toowoomba Diocese, he became Parish Priest of Crows Nest. He was appointed as the first P.P. to the new Parish of Tannymorel in 1930. Appointments were also in Oakey (1931-51) and Allora (1951-60). Whilst in Allora he extended the Church including a new Sanctuary. He was very Irish in his mannerisms and speech, and hard to get on with, tough on people and demanding of their resources. Unfortunately he was not very popular with anybody. He died on the 19th February 1960 and is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
