Biographical Notes

The Rev. Father Dawson, Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth, 4 December 1884, p 2,http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article201597093:

This gentleman, who at the present time is a guest of the Very Rev. Dean Tierney, has been visiting Beechworth for the past week. He hails from England, and is travelling Australia for the benefit of his health. His active, restless spirit and the desire of his ministry, however, forced him to preach morning and evening in St. Joseph's Church on Sunday. [...] The rev. gentleman will hear confessions next Saturday evening at the usual time, and masses will be said on Sunday at 8 o'clock and at 10, when a "Missa Cantata" will be sung. Our earnest hope is that Australia will revive his constitution; and one of the healthy spots of the continent is Beechworth.

The Gisborne Mission, Advocate, Melbourne, 18 July 1885, p 16,http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article170310846:

The Rev. Fr. Dawson has just concluded a most successful mission in Sunbury. The church was crowded every evening, and during the week a large number of the school children were admitted to Holy Communion. It is proposed to open a mission in Gisborne next Sunday.

Gisborne, Advocate, Melbourne, 22 August 1885, p 16,http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article170311280:

Catholic Intelligence.

(From a Correspondent.) On Sunday last a representative assemblage of the Catholics of that portion of the parish of Gisborne comprised in Gisborne, Macedon, Bullengarook, and Cabbage Tree, presented an address and a purse of sovereigns to the Rev. Fr. Dawson, who, on the invitation of our respected pastor, the Rev. Jas. Carroll, has conducted a mission here for the past few weeks. The address, read by Mr. Gorman, head teacher of the Roman Catholic School, alluded to the success attending the exertions of the Rev. Father in the cause of our holy religion, and the benefits derived by the district from his visit. Cr. P. Barry, in presenting the offering, said he, as treasurer of the fund, had much pleasure in doing so. The sum contained in the purse was contributed by a great number of the residents of the parish, all of whom willingly gave their mite towards the good object. He hoped that, with renewed health, the Rev. Father would be long spared for further usefulness. In accepting the address, Fr. Dawson said he felt grateful to the people of Gisborne for their kind wishes. If he had been the humble instrument of bringing back to the fold any who, from carelessness or other causes, had temporarily strayed thereform, to God be the honour and glory given. He would always think of Gisborne with pleasure, and hoped the people would remember him in their prayers.
